Who is Tilly Wils?

I started my studies at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague in 1974. I attended several workshops, but it turned out to be that my favourite workshop was painting with colours. It was my desire to learn abstract painting. However I felt that I first had to master the basic principles of the trade before going in that direction.

In the beginning I worked in a realistic style, but after a few years my work had evolved into a lyric-abstract style.

What sound is for music, is colour for the art of painting. The relationship between the arts can be experienced in my work. I always listen to music when I am working. It does not matter what kind of music, for instance classical music, jazz or rock-n-roll.

Sometimes there are eruptions of sound or swinging parties that inspire my explosions of colour. With grand gestures I paint (I make most of the paint myself) the composition on the canvas. Just like sounds, colours can support and reinforce one another.

I do not use only brushes, but also the palette knife, tissues, and especially my hands.

The charcoallines that sketched the contours disappear under the painting but are touching up again. This style feature is an important trademark.

When the painting is in harmony, and "it expresses overwhelming force", I know it is complete. It is ready to leave my studio, but I remain behind, once again to compose a new explosion of colour.

Since many years my work is shown in a number of galleries in The Netherlands. Over the years a lot of paintings have been purchased by for instance the Dutch Central Government (e.g. the Ministery of Foreign Affairs), international companies in trade and industry and also a great number of private persons.

Consequently my work is now spread all over the world.
